Sarah Leonard is a Vice President in The Glover Park Group’s Los Angeles office. She brings to the firm nearly 10 years of experience in high-profile California and national political, public awareness and initiative campaigns.
Prior to joining GPG as part of the firm’s expansion to the West Coast, Leonard directed communications for California Lieutenant Governor John Garamendi’s primary campaign, for a coalition of California’s largest labor unions to defeat anti-worker and anti-consumer ballot initiatives, and oversaw direct mail campaigns that helped re-elect Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano, send four new Members to Congress and elect dozens of new legislators and school board members.
Before to moving to Los Angeles, Leonard worked in Washington D.C. as the national spokesperson for the three most powerful independent expenditure groups of the 2004 election: America Coming Together, The Media Fund and America Votes. In that role she moved the Democratic message through elite national media and their outlets, securing high-profile pieces on network newscasts, The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Newsweek and Time. She also coordinated message, research and media outreach with the communications directors of 33 of the largest progressive organizations in the country.
Leonard has served as press secretary and traveling staff for U.S. Senator Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), as Iowa communications director and national spokesperson for Democratic Presidential Candidate Governor Howard Dean, and communications director for the Iowa Democratic Party during Vice President Al Gore’s Presidential campaign.
With extensive state, local and national media contacts, she has been quoted in leading media including The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Newsweek, U.S. News and World Report, and Washington Post.
Leonard received Bachelor degrees in Journalism and Political Science from Iowa State University, where she also worked toward her Masters in Communication.
